Leading from start to finish is something you do not see often at junior golf tournaments. However, this week at Forsyth Country Club, Caroline Hawkins of Columbia, S.C. did just that to be crowned the 66th Carolinas Junior Girls’ Champion.

“It feels really good to win this tournament,” Hawkins said. “ I came into this tournament knowing there were some really good girls in the field. I didn’t even think I could win going into it.”

The 14-year-old going up against the best juniors girls’ in the Carolinas opened with back-to-back rounds of 4-under-par, 68, then closed with 1-under-par, 71 to finish at 9-under-par, 207. This is her first Carolinas Golf Association victory and it just happens to be at the marquee junior girls’ championship.

Hawkins was the only player in the field to shoot under par in each of the three rounds of the championship. What makes this feat more impressive is that she did it at Forsyth Country Club. The Donald Ross design featured several different types of holes that required the players to be precise off the tee and with their approach shots. The greens were lightning quick and had lots of undulation.

“These greens are insanely nice and at my home course they’re kind of rolling the same,” Hawkins said. “I felt like I was at my home course just playing another round of golf.”

Going into the final round with a five stroke lead, it was Hawkins' tournament to win as long as she played her game. She began her round stress-free, making four straight pars to keep her steady lead.

She took advantage of Nos. 5 and 6, which are both par-5s. Back-to-back birdies on these holes put a kickstart into her round. With the field chasing her, Hawkins found herself four shots up going into the back nine.

“I kept telling myself to stay calm and go for it,” Hawkins said. “I wanted to just play my game because I knew it was there this week.”

When you have a lead as big as Hawkins had, pars are your friend on the golf course. She made seven pars on her last nine. That mixed in with a birdie on No. 12 and a bogey on No. 16 earned her the championship.

“I really do think this win is going to be one that I always remember,” Hawkins said.

Earning runner-up in her last junior event was Morgan Ketchum of Winston-Salem, N.C. at 7-under-par, 209. Her final round of 5-under-par, 67 was the lowest round by any player in the field this week. She started the day six strokes off the lead and after her incredible final round, she finished just two strokes shy of the title.

Jenna Kim of Raleigh, N.C. captured third at 2-under-par, 214 at only 13 years old. Ella Stalvey of Blythewood, S.C. earned solo fourth at 1-under-par, 215.

The Carolinas Golf Association would like to extend a special thank you to Forsyth Country Club for their warm welcome and hospitality, especially Head Golf Professional Chase Adams, General Manager Lee Smith, Club President Russ Towner, Course Superintendent Matt Jones and all the staff at Forsyth Country Club .
