Harwell Claims Marathon NC Senior Amateur

 

 

Holly Springs, N.C. (May 10, 2023) -- Final results of the 37th North Carolina Senior Amateur Championship at The Club of 12 Oaks, Holly Springs, N.C. on May 10, 2023. The field competed at 6,547 yards (par 36-36--72).

Dale Bouguennec of Pinehurst, N.C., led after rounds one and two of the 37th North Carolina Senior Amateur Championship as the field looked to chase him down today. Bouguennec, unfortunately, struggled, as did many on the day, allowing others to battle it out for the top of the leaderboard. By the end of the round, a 3-way tie for the lead required a playoff.

 

Paul Jett (Southern Pines, NC), Steve Harwell (Mooresville, NC), and Paul Simson (Raleigh, NC) headed back to the 18th for an extra hole. Strong play and putting by all saw this marathon end going five extra holes in total. On the fifth green, Harwell left himself a tap-in par to better Jett, a few holes after Simson was eliminated.

 

"I was most happy with this victory in the manner of how I did it," said Harwell. "The playoff was unbelievable, I don't know how many birdies we made in that stretch, Paul played great I'm just happy to come out on top."

 

Harwell took advantage of Jett's only mistake in the extra holes session to finally end a very long and warm day for the golfers. "We played a lot better in the extras than we did all day," added Harwell, referencing the names moving up and down the leaderboard all round.

 

Harwell claims his second North Carolina Senior Amateur title and is also fresh off receiving the 2022 Carolinas Senior Player of the Year Award.

 

Overall Harwell, Jett and Simson (who was celebrating his birthday today) finished at +6 (220) over the three days. Lee Porter (Greensboro, NC) finished one shot off the lead after coming in at +7 (223).
