MEBANE, N.C - Paul Simson of Raleigh, N.C., and Lawrence Hicks of Greensboro, N.C., battled through wet and challenging conditions to claim the 65+ and 70+ titles at the N.C. Super Senior Championship at Mill Creek Golf Club.

The two-day championship featured 36 holes of stroke play. The championship included two age divisions: the 65+ Championship and the 70+ Championship.

Simson Wins 65+ Championship in Playoff

In the 65+ Championship, Macon Moye of Southern Pines, N.C., opened the tournament with a 5-under-par 67 to take a one-stroke lead over Todd W. Brown of Winston-Salem, N.C. Ten players shot par or better in the opening round, setting up a tight race heading into the final round.

Heavy rain moved into the area Sunday morning, leaving Mill Creek Golf Club playing long and wet. The rain continued throughout the day, making for challenging scoring conditions.

Simson, who opened with a 3-under-par 69, posted the lowest second-round score in the championship with an even-par 72. Moye followed his opening-round 67 with a 2-over-par 74. Both players finished at 3-under-par 141, forcing a one-hole playoff to determine the 65+ champion.

Simson prevailed in the playoff to claim the championship title, while Moye finished as runner-up.

James Pearson of Charlotte, N.C., finished third at 1-under-par 143 after rounds of 70 and 73.

Hicks Wins 70+ Championship

In the 70+ Championship, Hicks entered the final round one shot behind opening-round leader Dee Blankenhorn of Raleigh, N.C.

Blankenhorn fired a 4-under-par 68 in the first round to take the early lead, with Hicks, Johnny Elam of Charlotte, N.C., and Graham Banister of Raleigh, N.C., all one shot back at 3-under-par 69.

Hicks maintained his position on the leaderboard during the difficult final round, carding an even-par 72 to finish at 3-under-par 141 and claim the championship title.

Steve Fox of Pinehurst, N.C., and Russ Perry of Winston-Salem, N.C., tied for second at 1-under-par 143. Perry climbed the leaderboard with the low round of the 70+ Championship on Sunday, posting a 3-under-par 69.

Lennie Barton of Raleigh, N.C., finished fourth at 1-over-par 145.

The Carolinas Golf Association thanks the staff at Mill Creek Golf Club for hosting the N.C. Super Senior Championship and providing a great venue for the championship. The CGA also extends its appreciation to the volunteer rules officials who helped oversee tournament play throughout the week.
