Mallory Hetzel of Waynesville, NC Earns 6th CGA Title at 17th Carolinas Women's Match Play Championship

Stanley, NC – Final results of the 17th Carolinas Women’s Match Play Championship hosted by Cowans Ford Golf Club on Thursday, July 10, 2014.  Par 36-36—72  5984 yards.

Mallory Hetzel of Waynesville, NC captures her 6th CGA championship crown by defeating medalist Katie Kirk of Davidson, NC by a 7 and 6 margin.  Hetzel, who is the head women’s golf coach at Western Carolina University, remained steady throughout the week only making one bogey in her last two matches.  “It feels pretty good to win again,” Hetzel said.  “I’ve been focused so much on helping my players get better that I haven’t put in much time to get my game where it needs to be.”  Hetzel’s last major win came back in 2009 when she played for the University of Georgia.

Kirk, who has been on a hot streak as of late, seemed to lose steam in the finals.  “I lost my feel for the greens all of a sudden,” said Kirk.  “I just couldn’t make a putt and then I would start to force things and I let the match get away from me.  Fatigue probably set in a little as well.”  This is the second time Kirk has fought her way all the way in to the finals.  In 2013 she lost to eventual champion Katie Rose Higgins of Charleston, SC.  “I was hoping that I could win both the Carolinas Women’s Amateur (Stroke Play) and this tournament in the same year but it just wasn’t meant to be.  Congrats to Mallory on a great week.

Hetzel earned her way into the finals by defeating past champion Pat Brogden of Garner, NC by a 2 and 1 margin in the morning.  “I was never down in any of my matches.  I think that helped a lot with my confidence.  I never made many mistakes either and after a while I think that tends to wear on your opponent, said Hetzel.  Hetzel’s only mistake came on the par 4 8th hole where she pulled her drive into the trees.  “I just didn’t want to make a bogey,” Hetzel laughed.  Hetzel would punch out to the fairway and hit her approach shot to within 15 feet and make her putt for par.  “That was a personal victory for me.  I just kept telling myself don’t make a bogey.”  Hetzel would birdie the par 4 9th and would become the eventual champion after 12 holes.
