PINEHURST, N.C (July 12, 2025) –– Chandler Mulkey of John's Island, S.C. etched his name into CGA history on Friday, capturing the 111th Carolinas Amateur Championship at Pinehurst No. 7 in Pinehurst, N.C. with consistent play across four rounds.
Mulkey carded scores of 68, 69, 67 and 70 to finish at -14, 274 total edging out former champion Davis Womble of Winston-Salmen, N.C. in a tightly contested final round battle. The two traded blows throughout the day, with momentum shifting hole to hole, but it was Mulkey who sealed the win with a clutch birdie putt on the 18th green to clinch the title.
The victory earns Mulkey a 10-year exemption into all CGA events and championships, a place on the 2025 Carolinas Captain's Putter team as well as an exemption into the 2025 U.S. Amateur Championship, set to be played at The Olympic Club in San Francisco, CA.
“You can kind of feel the lore of golf around here…just the overall ambiance of this place is pretty special.” said Mulkey. When asked about his birdie putt on 18, Mulkey replied with “That’s what we live for…that’s what keeps you coming back and I’ll hopefully reflect on that in future competitions and use that confidence going forward.”
Mulkey's steady play all week was highlighted by a bogey-free 5-under, 67 in Round 3, which vaulted him into contention. His final round 2-under, 70 was marked by precision iron play and a steady short game under pressure. He was one of 5 players to shoot under par all 4 rounds of the tournament.
Brook Valley Claims Caper Cup Title
This tournament had many other standout players and moments. Gray Mitchum of Winterville, N.C. shot a 9-under, 63 (with a 29 on the front nine) in Round 2 to break the course record and secure his club, Brook Valley Country Club in Greenville, N.C., the win in the 2025 Capers Cup Club title. On the winning team was Mitchum, 2022 Carolinas Amateur champion, Nic Brown of Greenville, N.C., and Will Guidry of Winterville, N.C., shooting a team total of 4-under to take home the trophies. The Frank F. Capers Cup Team Competition is held during rounds one and two of the Carolinas Amateur Championship, and three or four members comprise a team. The low three scores count each round, and this year, 10 clubs competed for the title.
The Carolinas Golf Association extends its appreciation to the staff and membership of Pinehurst Country Club and Pinehurst No. 7 for their support and hospitality throughout the week. Special thanks to General Manager Ben Bridgers, PGA; Vice President of Golf Matt Barksdale, PGA; Head Golf Professional Dan Dicarlo, PGA; First Assistant Golf Professional Alyssa Snider, PGA; and the entire grounds crew and staff for helping host the 111th Carolinas Amateur Championship.
