South Region (Round 1):

In the only remaining 1st round match to be played, the #1 team from Palisades CC and TPC Piper Glen#1 required “sudden-death” to determine the winner. In an unusual outcome, neither team dominated on their home course during regular play. At the Palisades course, Scott and Nick Pavlish led Piper Glen with a 2 ½ to ½ point win while teammates Thompson and Conrad added 2 more. Barry Crowell and Joe Grimme led the Palisades team with a 2 point win and teammate Brad Turner won an individual point.

At Piper Glen, Chris Nee and Eric Miller teamed up for a 3 point sweep and early lead for Piper Glen. Clark Smith and Craig Puno responded for Palisades with a much needed sweep in the last pairing. A lot of credit though will be given to Ryan Norder’s halve after winning the 18th hole in the middle foursome that helped Piper Glen to force a playoff. In the “sudden-death” playoff, both teams remained tied after one hole. Then Craig Puno (Palisades) got up and down for birdie from the bunker on the 2nd playoff hole (a par 5) at Piper Glen to secure the win for Palisades.

North Region (Round 2):

Only one of three scheduled 2nd round matches in the North Region were able to play this past week-end.

Two playoff veteran teams, Bentwinds CC and Coharie CC, battled it out in soggy eastern NC in a close match. Coharie won 6 ½ to 2 ½ at home as Jack Parrish Jr. and Marvin Mitchell swept all 3 points for the home team. Teammates Richard Pearson and Brandon Williams added another 2 ½ points playing in the lead group. Currie Tee Howell posted a par 72 and won his individual match plus the four-ball point with help from Shane Parker to lead Bentwinds.

At Bentwinds CC all three home teams (Chad Goldston w/ Jeff Fallanca, Joel Marmion w/ James Mullane and Brian Smith w/ Arnie Bullock) posted 3, 2 ½ and 2 ½ point wins respectively to give Bentwinds a 2 point overall victory. BCC will meet the winner of the Wildwood Green GA vs Mountain Aire GA match to be contested Sunday October 4.

The other two matches (New River CC vs Mill Creek GC and Maple Chase CC#1 vs Umstead Pines) were rained out and have been re-scheduled for October 11.

South Region (Round 2):

The 2014 Interclub championship team from Highland Creek CC will continue their defense of the “Ben Payne” cup as they advanced to round 3 following a close 10 to 8 outcome over the Golf Club at Cedar Creek/Aiken GC in Aiken SC. The Cedar Creek/Aiken team held their own at home with two teams (David Jett w/ Todd Soderstrom and Joe Souza w/ Ken Brace) winning 2 ½ points each for a 6 to 3 win. At Highland Creek, Ryan Tripp playing with captain Charles “Chuck” Bennett won all three matches to lead the home team in a 7 to 2 win. Teammates Ron Hooper and Steve Cayea won individually and both four-ball matches for another 4 points.

Verdict Ridge G&CC and Olde Sycamore battled “Mother Nature”, as well as each other, on Saturday in one of the few other scheduled 2nd round playoff matches that actually completed. While Olde Sycamore held their own at home with a 6 to 3 advantage, the Verdict Ridge team took full advantage of home course knowledge and swept their opponents for all 9 match points. Jin Yang and Mike Akers led OSGP with a 3 point win while teammates John Mefford and Mark Hilton won individually. Mefford and James Pifer won their four-ball match as well. The three Verdict Ridge teams that won all the points at home included; Scott Knox/ Ralph Bozinni, Jeff Morgan/John McNamara and Scott Moroney/Glenn Carter. Mr. Bozinni also posted a 2 under 70 in the less than ideal conditions. Verdict Ridge will play the winner of the match between Cabarrus CC#1 and Palisades CC#1 scheduled for this week-end.

Tega Cay GC#1 shut down the #2 team from River Run CC 10 ½ to 7 ½ . While both teams split 4 ½ to 4 ½ at Tega Cay, Ryan Fandel w/ Rick Lerow and Philip Potts w/ Tommy Lerow swept their home team opponents at River Run to give them a 3rd round invitation. Steve Harwell with David Gray led River Run#2 with a 3 point win at home while teammates Will Motchar and Harry Morgan won all 3 points at Tega Cay. Next up for Tega Cay GC#1 will be the defending Interclub champions from Highland Creek CC as they have scheduled a match for October 24 with HCCC#1.
