NorthStone Captures the 6th Senior Interclub Title

 

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (October 28, 2021) – Final results of the 6th CGA Senior Interclub at Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C. on Wednesday, October 27, 2021.

After seven months of intense interclub competition, NorthStone Country Club in Huntersville, N.C. claims the title of the 6th CGA Senior Interclub champions.


NorthStone faced off against Wildwood Green No. 3 of Raleigh, N.C. in the final match of the CGA Senior Interclub season. Each team pitted their four best four-ball teams against the other in an 18-hole final match on Thursday morning.The format is one point per hole with two additional points going to the winner of the match. When the dust settled, NorthStone won by 13 points (46.5-33.5) over their opponents.


NorthStone won three of the four matches. In the first match, David Robert and David Wardop were able to put points on the board for NorthStone as they won Nos. 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 to secure 13 points over the Wildwood Green team of Trent Rhyne and Mark Nordin.


In the second match, Jeff Cockfurm and Mike Cassarion of Northstone went back and forth with Jim Creagh and Larry Key of Wildwood Green all day. Northstone was clinging to a one point advantage headed to No. 18, but Creagh and Key were able to win the 18th hole of the match to split the 20 points.


The third match of the day saw Jay Tuck and Whit Fairer of NorthStone take on Jimmy Hamilton and Dee Blankenhorn of Wildwood Green. The match came to No. 15 all tied. After a birdie by Tuck on 15 to go one up, Fairer was able to deliver a birdie on No. 16 to take a 2-point advantage with two holes left to play. After ties on the last two holes Northstone took home 12 more points.


In the anchor match, the NorthStone team of Rob Fulford and Patrick Flaherty squared off against Lennie Barton and Carl Hiller of Wildwood Green. Flaherty and Fulford took an early lead, winning two of the first three holes. Hiller and Barton would not go quietly as they battled back winning two of the next three holes. After matching holes from Nos. 7 to 14, Flaherty was able to make a birdie on No. 15. By the time the anchor match had reached 17 green the overall Championship had been secured by Northstone. Fulford and Flagther were able to earn 11.5 points to add to the total.


With over 100 teams competing in the fourth season of the CGA Senior Interclub, NorthStone Country Club have put their mark on the Thomas J. Thorpe trophy, named for the CGA Executive Committee member instrumental in the administration of the Carolinas Interclub seasons.


“The program is still growing and is catching on with clubs throughout the Carolinas,” said CGA Interclub Administrator Tom Thorpe. “It’s a wonderful benefit of being a CGA member and it’s only going to get bigger.”


In the program's inaugural year, 45 teams participated in the CGA Senior Interclub. This year, over 100 teams participated at the start of the season.


The CGA wishes to thank the members and staff of Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club, especially the General Manager and Director of Golf, Graham Gilmore, Head Golf Professional, Brett Harless and Director of Golf Course Maintenance, David Fruchte.
