10th N.C. Women's Senior Championship Set for April 23-24 at Raintree CC

10th NORTH CAROLINA WOMEN'S SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP AT RAINTREE COUNTRY CLUB IN CHARLOTTE, NC

WEST END, NC – Pat Brogden of Garner will attempt to repeat last year’s victory when the Carolinas Golf Association's 10th North Carolina Women's Senior Championship is played April 23-24 on the South Course at Raintree Country Club in Charlotte, NC.

Brogden won last year’s title by shooting 76-71—147 on the Irving Park course at Greensboro Country Club. She finished one stroke ahead of Charlotte’s Patty Moore, the winningest woman in CGA history, who claimed this event in 2004 and 2008. It was the third N.C. Women’s Senior Championship victory for Brogden, who previously won in 2007 and 2010.

Moore, winner of 17 CGA championships over the years, is also entered in 2013, along with 2006 and 2009 winner Melissa Sage of Charlotte and 2011 champion Angela Stewart of Greenville, NC. Becca McKinney of Raleigh won the “Tournament” division last year and is expected back, as is Mary Rhodes of Greensboro, who won the Super Senior trophy.

The championship is contested at 36 holes of stroke play with a championship division and tournament division (shorter course). A tie for the overall champion is decided by an on-course playoff.

Players are pre-flighted within their division according to handicap index as of the close of entries. Players have the option to compete in either the "Championship" division or "Tournament" division. "Tournament" division entrants play a shorter course and are ineligible for the overall championship.

Entry is open to any female amateur golfer who has reached her 50th birthday by April 23, 2013, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA handicap index at a CGA member club.

A field of 46 players is scheduled to compete this year.

The South Course at Raintree was designed by architect Russell Breeden and opened in 1971. The course, which has fast greens and is usually in great shape, has lots of water hazards that players must avoid. It went through major renovations to tee boxes, greens and greenside bunkers in 1994.

The par-72 course will play at 5689 yards for those playing in the Championship Division and at 5191 yards for those in the Tournament tee division.
