Upsets Abound in N.C. Junior Boys' Match Play

13-year-old Jackson Van Paris of Pinehurst is the youngest player remaining in the bracket

THOMASVILLE, N.C. (June 28, 2017) -- Match Play Rounds of 64 & 32 results from the 50th N.C. Junior Boys’ Championship at Colonial Country Club in Thomasville, N.C. on Wednesday, June 28th (6,809 yards, par 36-35--71, Course Rating 72.3/123).

After navigating Tuesday's stroke play qualifying round, 64 junior golfers competed Wednesday against each other and breezy conditions at Colonial Country Club in Thomasville, N.C. Match play winners complete two rounds per day for three straight days before a champion is crowned. "The format is the hardest tournament to win in North Carolina for junior boys," says Jason Cox, CGA Director of Junior Golf & Tournament Operations.

Upsets were the theme Wednesday. In the first round, nearly half (13 of 32) matches were won by the lower seed. The highest remaining seed following the first two rounds of match play is No. 12, Tanner Bibey of Walnut Cove. In a day filled with drama - 20 matches went at least 17 holes - the 18-year-old needed 19 holes in both of his matches to advance. Bibey, who will play at Catawba College in the fall, chipped-in on the first extra hole of his Round of 64 match. On the 18th hole of his next match, Bibey drained a 40-foot eagle putt to force extra golf, then won with a remarkable par from behind a tree on the par-4 1st.

Jackson Van Paris of Pinehurst was one of the final players to qualify for match play, earning the 60th seed in a 19-for-9 playoff Tuesday evening. The 13-year-old Van Paris showed he had the talent to belong in the bracket, dismissing the No. 5 and No. 28 seeds with 4&3, 7&6 results. "After I got in through the playoff, I came in with a new fresh mind today," said Van Paris. "I felt like if I did everything I hoped and planned for, it would work out." The highlight of his day was an eagle on the par-4 16th with a sand wedge from 91 yards in his afternoon match. Although he is the youngest player remaining in the field, Van Paris has match play experience, capturing the 2016 North Carolina Boys' 13 & Under Championship, an event with a similar format.

The stroke play medalist, 16-year-old Spencer Oxendine of Fayetteville, never trailed in his opening match, winning 5&4. In the Round of 32, Oxendine faced 14-year-old Narayan Mohan of Charlotte, who had advanced after a 23 hole marathon in the first round. Mohan showed no signs of fatigue, converting five birdies to defeat the No. 1 seed 4&3. "I was kind of tired, so I was a little stress free," said Mohan. "Then I started rolling in putts, so it felt good."

The lowest seed remaining is Kenan Poole, II of Raleigh, seeded No. 61 following medal play. Poole closed-out both of his matches Wednesday on their 18th hole, posting victories of 3&1, 2&1.

The Round of 16 will begin Thursday morning at 8:00 a.m. from the first tee.

The championship format is match play with an 18 hole of stroke play qualifier to determine the seeding for match play. The top 64 boys from the stroke play qualifier advance to match play. The 50th North Carolina Junior Boys' champion will be invited to represent the CGA in the Virginias-Carolinas Junior Team Matches at Boonesboro Country Club in Lynchburg, VA on August 12-13, 2017.

Entry is open to any male amateur golfer ages 12-18 as of June 30, 2017, who has not started college, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association and has a current USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club that does not exceed 18.3. There are no age divisions. Boys will compete in one division.

Scoring will be provided by the CGA throughout the championship, offering 9 and 18-hole updates. Live updates will also be available on the CGA’s official Junior Department Twitter, @CarolinasJunior.
