Brandon Einstein of Clemmons, N.C. is back to defend his title at the 10th North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship. Einstein, a rising sophomore at High Point University, defeated Carson Ownbey of Canton, N.C., 2 and 1 in last year’s final match to claim his second CGA title of the 2018 championship season. His first win came at the 51st N.C. Junior Boys’ Championship which is also decided by match play format.

The field for the 2019 championship is expected to consist of 123 players. Championship format is 36 holes of stroke play to determine the 32 qualifiers for match play. The defending champion is seeded number one for match play. Players advancing to match play will receive merchandise and are exempt into the 2020 North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship.

This will be the seventh CGA Championship contested at Catawba Country Club. The first was the 1958 Carolinas Amateur Championship won by Billy Joe Patton of nearby Morganton, N.C. when the championship was still contested in a match play format. The most recent CGA Championship held at Catawba Country Club was the 2015 Carolinas Women’s Four-Ball Championship which was won by the team of Courtney McKim of Raleigh, N.C. and Stephanie Pribonic of Wake Forest, N.C.

With approximately 200 acres of picturesque piedmont Carolina landscape located in Newton, N.C., Catawba Country Club offers a unique championship-caliber golfing experience. The course was designed in 1946 by famed-architect, Donald Ross. In 2016, many Catawba Country Club members joined in a fundraising effort to restore the golf course greens and bunkers to the historic configuration per the original drawings made by Ross. Like many Ross designs, greens missed in the right place can still offer par but in the wrong place, golfers will be scrambling to avoid high numbers.
