Abigail Schimpf of Daniel Island, S.C. took an early lead at the 63rd Carolinas Junior Girls’ Championship today with a 2-under-par, 70 finish.

“On the front nine I definitely hit it in the fairway more often and gave myself more chances with wedges,” said Schimpf. “While on the back nine I had to go for a few pars, because I was not hitting every fairway. I just wanted to keep giving myself opportunities and that is my strategy for tomorrow.”

While managing to avoid a three-putt in her round, Schimpf said that putting was definitely her strength today that she would like to carry on into round two tomorrow.

“It is still just the first day and there is a lot of golf left to play so I do not want to get ahead of myself. I just need to focus on giving myself chances and opportunities,” said Schimpf.

Emily Dunlap of Greenville, S.C. had a strong even-par, 72 round today which earned her second place going into the second round.

“Getting off first and being in a twosome, we were able to just play really fast which kept me relaxed,” said Dunlap. “I just tried to hit fairways and greens and I was really consistent all day, so it worked well for me.”

Dunlap certainly hit plenty of fairways and greens during her round and managed to sink a birdie on No. 7. She plans to go into tomorrow with the same plan and focus a bit more on putting to really get her game where she wants it. “It is a goal of mine to hit as many greens as possible so that hopefully I can just two-putt and if a couple of putts go in then it will be great,” said Dunlap.

Rachel Rich of Mount Pleasant, S.C. and Sophie Holland of Cornelius, N.C. both carded 1-over-par, 73 to set themselves in good position tied for third heading into round two.

With 2-over-par, 74 finishes, defending champion Maria Atwood of Holly Springs, N.C., Karlee Vardas of Lexington, S.C., Alexia Siehl of Fort Mill, S.C. and Ella Stalvey of Blythewood, S.C. are in a four-way-tie for fifth.

With two more rounds left in the tournament, it is anyone’s game. Play will continue on Wednesday, July 31 and finish on Thursday, August 1.
