The first round of the Carolinas Women’s Four-Ball ended with six sides in red numbers and a lot of birdies made at the Carolina Country Club. Future Anderson University teammates Emma Charles of Hartsville, S.C. (rising freshman) and Victoria Hall of Moore, S.C. (rising sophomore) teamed up for a 4-under-par 68 in the first round to put them in a tie at the top of the leaderboard. The team cited their putting as the defining factor in their score today.

“Emma had some clutch putts today, some good birdie putts,” Hall stated. “Yeah, we were making a lot from 20-30 feet. Victoria almost had a hole in one on No. 15,” added Charles. They hope to carry that momentum into the final round on Tuesday.

Also sitting atop the leaderboard at 4-under-par 68 is Caroline Cahill of Wilmington, N.C. and Natalie Petersen of Holly Springs, N.C. They finished with five birdies and one bogey to tie the lead heading into the final round.

“We started off with a really solid start and we were both really hitting it good today. We were perfect for best ball because when one person would be in trouble, the other person would save us with par or birdie. We were great best ball partners,” stated Petersen. “We think very similarly on the golf course, so we were good at strategizing and we teamed up well together,” added Cahill.

After a 3-under-par 69 performance, three teams are tied for third heading into the final round: defending champion Jodee Tindal of Rock Hill, S.C. and her partner Emily Dunlap of Greenville, S.C., reigning Carolinas Women’s Amateur Champion Jessica Spicer and her partner, twin sister Sarah Spicer both of Bahama, N.C., and reigning Twin States Junior Girls’ Champion Alexis Sudjianto of Charlotte, N.C. and her partner Muskan Uppal of Cornelius, N.C.

In the Senior Division, Pam Prescott of Piedmont, S.C. and Chrissie Spidell of Anderson, S.C. fired a 3-under-par 69 to lead the division by three strokes. The team recorded two birdies on the day, but their performance was highlighted by a chip-in eagle on No. 17 by Prescott. Three strokes back at even-par 72 are Leigh Coulter of Hopkins, S.C. and Terrie Allemang of Hilton Head, S.C. Reigning Carolinas Senior Women’s Player of the Year Lea Anne Brown of Mt. Pleasant, S.C. and her partner Kim Briele of New Bern, N.C. are six strokes out of the lead after a 3-over-par 75 in the first round.

The Carolinas Women’s Four-Ball Championship will conclude on Tuesday, August 6. There will be a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.
