Landon Barnes of Pilot Mountain, N.C., Jake Herring of Wilson, N.C. and Colin Dutton of Foxfire, N.C. finished their 18 holes of stroke play qualifying at 4-under-par, 68 to share medalist honors. The three will be randomly assigned the top three seeds for the match play bracket that begins tomorrow.

Barnes, who will be an incoming freshman on the Guilford College men’s golf team this fall, made seven birdies on the day, including three on the back nine, but his most exciting stretch of holes came on the front nine. On the par-5 sixth hole, Barnes made double-bogey, but quickly made the proper adjustments for back to back birdies on the seventh and eighth holes.

“I knew it was just one bad swing, and I knew what I did wrong, so I was able to correct it quickly, which was a big thing,” Barnes said. “I wasn’t worried since I knew what I did wrong. Like I said, my putting and everything else was still really good today, and I knew that Nos. 7 and 8 were really gettable holes. I just trusted myself, trusted my swing and made a couple of birdies.”

Herring also had a run on birdies with four in seven holes between No. 8 and No. 14. The N.C. State commit said after the round that he felt as if he struggled at points on the front nine, making mostly pars on the stretch of holes, but was able to capitalize on opportunities in the back nine with better putting and more greens hit.

“I want to be a little bit more aggressive and smart when I need to be,” Herring said about his mindset entering match play. “My goal is to just enjoy the time and not let small things get to me. Go low and hope for the best.”

As for Dutton, he made six birdies in his first 10 holes, but gave up some strokes with four bogeys on the day. Dutton was still able to finish tied at the top of the leaderboard, thanks in large part to an eagle on No. 13. He had a game plan coming into the day, and by executing it, Dutton feels good about his positioning heading into match play.

“My game plan coming in was to hit to the spots,” Dutton said. “I picked aiming points on each hole and figured out where to land it on the greens according to where the pins are, because these greens are really sloped. You have to account for the spin … I should just stick to the game plan. Be aggressive where I can and make a lot of birdies. Keep making putts, hitting shots. That’s all it is.”

The cut line to make match play settled at 3-over-par, 75. With twenty players tied at 75, all of them participated in a playoff for 13 spots. Davis DeLille of High Point, N.C. secured his spot in match play after just one hole of the playoff, making a birdie on No. 1. The final 12 spots were then secured with scores of par or better on Nos. 2 and 3.

Players will be seeded for the match play bracket based on their qualifying score and any ties for seeds will be decided by blind draw. First round matches will begin at 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday.
