Due to inclement weather, the final round of the HV3 Invitational was canceled and the tournament was reduced to an 18-hole event. Therefore, the first round leaders at each course became the HV3 Invitational Champions.

Alex Bock of Morganton, N.C., Griffin Tarver of Tega Cay, S.C. and Jerry Bruns of Beaufort, S.C. were crowned as the HV3 Invitational Champions today, thanks to their strong opening rounds yesterday.

Bock shot 1-under-par, 70 in his first round at Gaston Country Club. Consistency was key as he played a bogey-free round after the first hole. The high school freshman made par on every hole from No. 2 to No. 16. Then he put his foot on the gas and finished his round with birdies on Nos. 17 and 18. Only eight other players were able to birdie No. 17.

Bruns and Tarver did not find their success in consistency, but instead in aggressive play. Tarver tied with Bock at Gaston Country Club with a 1-under-par, 70 finish. With the help of three birdies on the front nine, he made the turn at 33. The back nine proved more challenging as he carded three bogeys, but birdies on Nos. 10 and 13 helped to even out his scorecard. Tarver will start his collegiate golf career in the fall at Charleston Southern University.

Bruns shot the low round of the day with a 5-under-par, 67 at Cramer Mountain Club. He fired off four birdies out of his first five holes to take a quick lead. The high school sophomore proceeded to make three more birdies on the day to secure a four stroke lead and ultimately a trophy at Cramer Mountain Club.

What made this win even sweeter? This is the first CGA Championship title that any of them have earned and Harold Varner III was there to congratulate them himself.

The CGA would like to extend a thank you to the members and staff of Cramer Mountain Club, especially Head Golf Professional Jon Meyers, and Gaston Country Club, especially Head Golf Professional Thomas Troncoso, for their hospitality in hosting the HV3 Invitational. We would also like to thank Harold Varner III and the HV3 Foundation for the support and for making this event possible.

About HV3 Foundation

The HV3 Foundation was launched in January 2019 in an effort to give back to less fortunate kids that could greatly benefit from increased access and opportunity in sport. The cost of equipment, proper coaching, and access has become very expensive and unaffordable to many.

The mission for the HV3 Foundation is to bring awareness to the rising cost of entry and access in sports. The foundation will aim to provide financial assistance for equipment, after school programs, instruction, camps, and various other avenues where an athlete can cultivate his/her passion.
