Macy Pate of Winston-Salem held on to her lead throughout the second round of qualifying stroke-play to earn medalist honors and the No.1 seed entering the Round of 32 matches. Pate signed off on a 5-under-par, 67 on Wednesday to expand her stroke play qualifying margin to 8-strokes over second place finishers Kayla Dowell of Mebane and Kiera Bartholomew of Wake Forest.

Pate found a rhythm early in her round. She had a pair of early birdies on Nos. 2 and 3, which caused her some frustration after bogeying them both the day before.

“It made me feel more confident going into the rest of the holes,” the medalist said after her round. “I knew I had a two-shot lead going into today and after those two holes it went to four-shots, so I was just trying to stay focused and keep the round going.”

Pate’s outward nine score of 2-under-par, 34, consisted of three birdies and one bogey. Her back nine performance was impeccable: she drained six pars and three birdies for a score of 3-under-par, 33.

“I was putting well. I was hitting my shots and wedges pretty close to the pins and most of the clubs I had in were a pitching wedge or a 9-iron. I was hitting all of my shots to about 20 feet and the putts .. I was making the putts”

Following Pate’s award winning stroke-play performance, Pate and the rest of the field set back out on the course for the Round of 32 matches.

The No. 1 seed beat her opponent, the No. 32 seed Katherine Dann of Charlotte, 6 & 5. Pate would not start gaining the lead over Dann until her win on the seventh hole. Pate went on to win Nos.8, 10, 11, 12 and 13 to end the match five holes early.

“It was a good match. I don't think anything will change for tomorrow, just keep playing and hope for the best,” Pate said.

The defending champion, No. 6 seeded Morgan Ketchum of Winston-Salem, defeated the No. 27 seeded Hallie Wilson of Lewisville, 1 up. Ketchum’s victory was not guaranteed facing off against a higher seed and the match was determined on the players’ eighteenth green. Ketchum parred the par-5 No. 11 to win the hole and the match as Wilson bogeyed.

The No. 9 seed Grace Holcomb of Wilmington was upsetted by the No. 24 seed Kinsley Smith of Raleigh in a 4 & 2 defeat. Their match began on No.2 and finished on No.18’s green. After Smith lost No. 10, she found her groove and posted four massive wins on Nos. 12, 13, 14 and 17 to advance to Thursday’s round.

Play will continue on Thursday with the Round of 16 matches in the morning and those advancing will play their quarterfinal matches on Thursday afternoon.
