MILL SPRING, N.C. (July 10, 2025) – Team Carolinas continued its dominance in the Virginias-Carolinas Women’s Team Matches, capturing a weather-shortened but convincing win at the 68th edition of the event held at Bright’s Creek Golf Club in Mill Spring, N.C. The Carolinas squad totaled 54 points across two days of match play, doubling up Team Virginias’ 27 points to claim the title for the seventh straight year.

The annual 36-hole match play competition brings together top female amateur golfers from North Carolina and South Carolina to face their counterparts from Virginia and West Virginia. Each team consists of 18 players, including six seniors and two super seniors.

The opening round featured a split format: nine holes of Four-Ball Match Play followed by nine holes of Modified Alternate Shot. Three points were available per match—one for Four-Ball, one for Modified Alternate Shot and one for the overall match result.

Team Carolinas surged to a 6-3 lead after the Four-Ball session, highlighted by a 4 & 2 win from seniors Julie Streng of Greensboro, N.C. and Kimbra Benson of Pinehurst, N.C. The Carolinas squad kept the momentum going in the Alternate Shot format, again earning six points. Judy Penman and Jennifer Kitchen, both of Pinehurst, delivered a standout 4 & 2 victory.

Thanks in large part to the senior contingent, Team Carolinas built an 18–9 lead after day one. Notable sweeps came from the pairs of Toni Notaro of Pinehurst, N.C. and Lea Ann Brown of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; Adrian Anderson of Murrells Inlet, S.C. and Hannah Altman of Lake City, S.C.; and Co-Captain Katie Flaskerud of Charlotte, N.C. with Courtney Stiles of Pinehurst, N.C.

Round two featured Singles Matches and began with a flurry of wins by Carolinas’ seniors. Penman, Benson and Streng each earned victories, while Kitchen halved her match, tallying 3.5 early points.

Anderson and Altman followed with opening wins in the open amateur matches, helping to seal the deal. Though storms rolled in on the back nine and play was suspended, Team Carolinas had already earned enough points to clinch the overall victory. After a delay, the remaining matches were called and scores at suspension stood as final.

Five Carolinas players secured all three points in their singles matches: Grace Holcomb of Wilmington, N.C., Macie Burcham of Greensboro, N.C., Benson, Notaro and Altman. Impressively, Altman, Benson and Notaro went undefeated across all formats during the two-day competition.

“We always make it fun,” said Co-Captain Pam Prescott, as Team Carolinas celebrated another triumphant week in team match play.

The Carolinas Golf Association would like to thank the Virginias State Golf Association and the staff of Bright’s Creek Golf Club, especially Head Golf Pro Beau Burgess, General Manager Bill Bower, Superintendent Paul Beam, and Chef Matt Silva for their help in hosting the 68th Virginias-Carolinas Women’s Team Matches.
