Ashley Sloup of Southport, N.C. will be in the field at Porters Neck Country Club to defend her title. Last year's three-shot win for her first CGA victory validated the 21-year-old's belief in her ability.

"I feel good about my game and continue to work hard every day," said Sloup. She followed her Carolinas Women's Amateur win with a runner-up finish the next month at the North Carolina Women's Amateur. "I gained a lot of confidence from the win last year, and that experience has helped me become a better and more mature player."

A rising senior at Winthrop University, Sloup currently ranks 8th among Carolinas women. "I am just thankful to have won last year and thankful for the opportunity to defend."

83 players are expected to compete in the 91st edition of the longest running women's championship in the Carolinas. Other top players in the field include:

  • Katie Kirk, 24, of Winterville, N.C. Kirk won this championship in 2014 and 2015. She finished T21 last year.
  • Gracyn Burgess, 17, of Lexington, S.C. The top-ranked junior girl in South Carolina, the high school junior has numerous recent tournament wins, including last year's Twin States Girls' and this year's Vicki DiSantis Girls' Championship.

  • Courtney McKim, 26, of Raleigh, N.C. McKim won her first CGA title at the 2015 Carolinas Women's Four-Ball. Searching for her first individual win in CGA play, McKim is ranked 9th in the Carolinas.
  • Reona Hirai, 21, of Summerville, S.C. Hirai finished in third at last year's championship. Also searching for her first individual CGA victory, Hirai teamed with Kelli Murphy to capture the Carolinas Women's Four-Ball in May. A rising senior at Furman University, Hirai ranks 14th among Carolinas women.
  • Lea Venable, 43, of Simpsonville, SC. Venable, a three-time CGA champion, is ranked fourth in Carolinas. She held the 18-hole lead at last year's championship before finishing T12.
  • Kim Briele, 56, of New Bern, N.C. Briele, the 2015 North Carolina Women's Senior champ, won last year's Senior division of this championship.
