Kathryn Carson Claims Linda Marsh Trophy in Wire-to-Wire Victory

Kathryn Carson of Mooresville, N.C. completed a wire-to-wire victory on Friday afternoon at the North Carolina Junior Girls' Championship. The future East Carolina Pirate started the week as the stroke play qualifying medalist after carding a 3-under-par 141. She moved into match play as the No. 1 seed and never looked back. She was only down in one match all week and that only lasted three holes. Carson's stellar play earned her the Linda Marsh trophy.
"Winning the North Carolina Junior Girls' is really special, especially because it's my last year playing junior events and getting a junior win under my belt is a pretty big deal. I have a few more junior events this summer that I'm looking to play well in, maybe win a few, and then hoping to get a qualifying spot to start for ECU this fall."
Carson's semifinal match opponent was Lotte Fox of Raleigh, N.C. Carson stayed steady all morning, going for the center of greens and playing more conservatively. "I basically parred her to death - I made a bunch of pars and stayed up the whole time." In the other semifinal match, Rachael Mast of Lexington, N.C. lit up the golf course. She carded a 6-under-par 29 on the front nine and led Nina Kouchi of Charlotte, N.C. 4-up going into the tenth hole. Rachael closed out her match early, defeating Kouchi on the 14th hole 5&4.
Carson started off strong from the very beginning of the final match. She made three consecutive birdies at holes three, four and five, another birdie at eight, and finished off her front nine in style with an eagle on the 460-yard Par 5 ninth. "I knew I had to go out and make birdies after Rachael shot 29 on the front in her first match. I wasn't planning on going for some of the pins that were tucked, but I knew how she was playing and knew I had to." Mast made par on the Par-3 12th and gained one, but it was not enough to mount a comeback. Carson sunk a 25-foot birdie putt on the Par-5 15th to claim the match 4&3 and be crowned the 21st North Carolina Junior Girls' Champion.
The CGA wishes to thank Bermuda Run Country Club (West) for all of their hard work this week and for supporting the CGA. Bermuda Run Country Club's East Course will host a U.S. Women's Amateur qualifier in July.
