Barr Battles Way into Semifinals as No. 54 Seed

Round 3 of Match Play 

 

Clayson Good of Durham, N.C. and Jackson Brimfield of Chapel Hill, N.C. played one of the more exciting matches of the day as the two players battled for a position in the quarterfinals. Good was 4 up through nine holes, but Brimfield made sure that he didn’t go down without a fight. He made a birdie on No. 12 and an eagle on No. 14 to extend the match, but ultimately fell 4 and 3 on the fifteenth green.

 

“On No. 14, Jackson hit a 3 wood to about 10 feet and made an eagle,” Good said. “I was still in control at that point, but I thought he might make a charge on the last couple of holes. I am glad that I was able to close it out on No. 15 though.”

 

Jennings Glenn of Raleigh, N.C. and Owen Kose of Holly Springs, N.C. also played an exciting match as Glenn defeated Kose with a birdie on the 19th hole.

 

Jake Herring of Wilson, N.C. is the last remaining of the three stroke play qualifying medalists after defeating Andrew Plate of Greensboro, N.C. 2 up. Fellow medalist Collin Dutton of Foxfire, N.C. lost 3 and 2 to Carter Busse of Davidson, N.C.

 

Quarterfinals

 

Charlie Barr of Salisbury, N.C. is the highest remaining seed in the field at the 53rd North Carolina Junior Boys’ Championship as the No. 54 seed defeated Carter Busse of Davidson, N.C. on the 18th hole of his match, 1 up. Barr hit his 5-iron from over 200 yards out and stuck it just a few feet from the hole, and after Busse failed to get up and down from off the green, Barr’s eagle was conceded.

 

“It was back and forth the whole entire time,” Barr said about his match with Busse. “I missed a couple of short ones early on. He made two or three 10-footers for birdie. Then I fired back a couple more. He birdied No. 10 to go 1 up and it stayed that way until No. 14 when I made par and he made bogey. We made birdies on the next hole to tie, and it was pretty much just back and forth the rest of the way.”

 

Barr defeated Hampton Roberts of Cary, N.C. 6 and 4 on Thursday morning. He also beat Caden Baker of Mebane, N.C. and Wilson Thrift of Charlotte, N.C. to get to this point. Barr’s first step was navigating his way through a 20 for 13 playoff on Tuesday afternoon to even get the chance to play in the match play portion of the championship.

 

“I was here from 7:30 that morning to 7:45 that night just waiting around so it was something that I don't want to do again and luckily I made it through the playoff,” Barr said. “I am not going to do anything differently tomorrow. I have played well in this tournament in the past, but have just caught the wrong person on the wrong day. So I am hoping tomorrow that I can just play my game, make pars, hopefully a few birdies and just eliminate the bogeys and see what happens.”

 

Barr will be taking on Davis Adams of Raleigh, N.C. in tomorrow morning’s second semifinal match. The first match of the day will be between Clayson Good of Durham, N.C. and Kyle Kushnir of Raleigh, N.C. Adams knocked off No. 2 seed Jake Herring of Wilson, N.C. 4 and 2 in his quarterfinal match. Meanwhile, Good took down Zach Roberts of Holly Springs, N.C. 2 and 1, and Kushnir defeated Jennings Glenn of Raleigh, N.C. 4 and 3.
