Good Grabs 53rd N.C. Junior Boys' Championship

 

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (June 26, 2020) -- Semifinals and championship match results of the 53rd North Carolina Junior Boys’ Championship at Maple Chase Golf and Country Club in Winston-Salem, N.C. from June 26, 2020. (6,772 yards, par 36-36--72)

Semifinals 

 

Clayson Good of Durham, N.C. defeated Kyle Kushnir of Raleigh, N.C. in our first match off the tee this morning, 2 and 1. Good held the lead or was tied with Kushnir on every hole besides No. 9. 

 

The front nine was full of back and forth ties to 1 up for Good, but the back nine is where Good started heating up. Starting with a birdie on No. 10, Good brought it back to a tie, then he took it to 1 up yet again on the 11th green. After another birdie on No. 13, Good made it to 2 up and then he put it in cruise control to finish 2 and 1 on the 17th green. 

 

In our second semifinal, Charlie Barr of Salisbury, N.C. took down Davis Adams of Raleigh, N.C. 5 and 4. The No. 54 seed Barr played consistent golf to secure his spot in the championship match, making par on nine of the 14 holes.

 

After the two players split each of the first four holes, Barr took the lead in the match on No. 5 with a par and never looked back. An eagle on No. 6 extended his advantage to two holes, and by the turn to the back nine, Barr held a three hole lead. With a par, birdie, par finish on holes 12 through 14, Barr was able to clinch the match.

 

Championship Match

 

After 20 holes on Sunday afternoon, it was Clayson Good of Durham, N.C. emerging victorious and claiming the 53rd North Carolina Junior Boys’ Championship. Good defeated Charlie Barr of Salisbury, N.C. with a par on the second extra hole giving him his first lead of the match. It was the only one he needed.

 

“To be honest I was ready to lose on the 17th green,” Good said. “I was really tired and hit a bad shot off the tee, but he did too. He finally missed a putt for par and I managed a par. Then he got unlucky with his putt on No. 18 and I ended up hitting a good chip there. Other than those last few holes, he putted so well and just overall played insanely.”

 

Good and Barr went blow for blow all match long as the two cycled between tied and Barr leading by one. Barr held leads through No. 4, No. 5 and No. 9 on the front, as well as holes 10, 11, 15, 16 and 17. While Barr had his chances to put the match away, Good hung around and made birdie on No. 18 to send the match to extra holes.

 

Both Good and Barr made clutch putts on the first playoff hole to make birdie, and Good clinched the match with a par on the 20th hole of play.

 

“I won No. 18 with a birdie and then we got to No. 1 for extra holes and I had a lot of adrenaline in me from No. 18,” Good said. “I pulled it into the left trap and somehow hit a wedge to about 10 feet and made that. He hit a really good shot there too, he made birdie. On No. 2 it was playing like 190 yards and I hit my 8-iron 190 yards downhill with all of that adrenaline in me. I never hit an 8-iron that far.”

 

Good said that he played in last year’s N.C. Junior Boys’ Championship but missed the cut for match play. He tripled the last two holes last year and told his parents that he wouldn’t let the outcome be the same this year.

 

“I came back for redemption,” Good said. “This is my last year to play in it so I am really happy that I won.”
