McKenzie Daffin of Fort Bragg, N.C. has been the most consistent golfer at the 16th Dogwood State Junior Girls’ Championship and because of that, she holds the lead entering the final round. On Wednesday, Daffin shot a 4-under-par, 68 at Ironwood Golf & Country Club, the lowest round of the championship thus far.

After playing the first seven holes at 1-over-par, Daffin really got her day going around the turn. She made birdie from about 12 feet on No. 8 and kept the momentum going by sinking a 20-footer on No. 9. Then, to start the back nine, she made her third straight birdie and moved to 2-under-par on the day.

“I hit three pretty good putts,” Daffin said. “Especially on Nos. 8 and 9, when I made it from a longer distance. The putt on No. 10 was a lot easier coming from just about 5 feet.”

Daffin followed up the stretch of birdies with four more to finish the round, giving her seven total, including five on the back nine.

“I really just figured out my distances today,” she said. “I started getting really close to the pins on the back nine. I had a couple of five, six foot putts that I made. My iron play was the biggest difference, along with reading the putts well when I got on the greens.”

Heading into the final round, Daffin leads second-place Emily Mathews of Mebane, N.C. by five strokes. First-round leader Alexsandra Lapple of Pinehurst, N.C. will also be in the final group after carding a 78 today. Despite being atop the leaderboard, Daffin is making sure not to look too far ahead. She wants to keep things simple and focus on herself, hoping that her mindset will help bring home a championship on Thursday.

“I just want to focus on my game and shoot for par,” Daffin said. “If I make birdies, that's great, but I’m just going to be looking to land it in the fairway, get it on the green and make my putts.”

The final round of the 16th Dogwood State Junior Girls’ Championship at Ironwood Golf & Country Club will begin on Thursday, July 16 at 7:30 a.m. The final group will tee off at 9:20 a.m.
