Preview: 25th North Carolina Four-Ball Championship

 

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (October 7, 2020) -- The Carolinas Golf Association will conduct the 25th North Carolina Four-Ball Championship at The Cardinal by Pete Dye and Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. from October 9 - 11, 2020. Each team will play both The Cardinal by Pete Dye and Forest Oaks Country Club. The final round on Sunday will be held at The Cardinal by Pete Dye. The field will compete at 6,953 yards, par 71 at The Cardinal by Pete Dye and 7,001 yards, par 72 at Forest Oaks Country Club.

Players to Watch:

 

  • Trey Howell and Neil Wilkinson of Wilmington, N.C. are the reigning N.C. Four-Ball Champions and they are back to reclaim their title.
     

  • Davis Womble and Dan Walters of Winston-Salem, N.C. are the 2019 N.C. Four-Ball runners-up and both Womble and Walters have played some great golf since then. Walters was a Quarterfinalist at the Carolinas Four-Ball and claimed runner-up at the N.C. Mid-Amateur just last week. Womble was also a Quarterfinalist at the Carolinas Four-Ball and finished in fifth at the Carolinas Amateur.
     

  • Ben Woodruff of Huntersville, N.C. and Carson Ownbey of Canton, N.C. won their second Carolinas Four-Ball Championship title in July and are looking to capture the North Carolina title this week.
     

  • Nick Lyerly of Salisbury, N.C. started his summer with a tie for third at the N.C. Amateur and then made it to the Semifinals at the Carolinas Four-Ball in July. Lyerly is playing with Justin Emmons of Asheboro, N.C. who tied for fifth at last year’s CCNC Amateur.

 

  • Walker Cress and Stephen Carroll of Concord, N.C. were the runners-up at the Carolinas Four-Ball this year at Camden Country Club. Cress tied with Lyerly for third at the N.C. Amateur and also made it to the Quarterfinals at the N.C. Amateur Match Play.
     

  • JD McNeill of Raleigh, N.C. and Jerry Richardson of Cary, N.C. are two-time N.C. Four-Ball Champions after back-to-back victories in 2016 and 2017. Richardson tied for ninth at the N.C. Mid-Amateur last week.

 

  • Tim Bunten of Concord, N.C. has had a year for the books starting with a victory at the Carolinian Amateur. Then Bunten tied for third at the N.C. Amateur and claimed runner-up at the N.C. Amateur Match Play. Bunten is playing with Eston Lee of Four Oaks, N.C. at this event.
     

  • Scott Harvey of Greensboro, N.C. is our 2019 Men’s Player of the Year and in August Harvey finished in 33rd at the U.S. Amateur. Harvey is playing with Preston Dembowiak of Kernersville, N.C. this weekend.

The championship format is 54 holes of four-ball stroke play. Gross scores only. After 36 holes, the field is cut to the low 40 scores and ties. A tie for the overall championship is decided by an on-course playoff. 

 

Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 13th birthday by October 9, 2020, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN® USGA Handicap Index® at a CGA member club.

About the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA)
