Preview: Inaugural Carolinas Collegiate Showcase

 

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (November 5, 2020) -- The Carolinas Golf Association will conduct the Inaugural Carolinas Collegiate Showcase at Grandover Resort (East and West) in Greensboro, N.C. from November 7 - 8, 2020. Each player will play both courses and the yardages are as follows. East Course: Boys - 7,205 yards, Girls - 6,005 yards (36-36--72). West Course: Boys - 6,800 yards, Girls - 6,125 yards (36-36--72).

The Carolinas Collegiate Showcase gives the best junior boy and junior girl golfers in North Carolina and South Carolina the opportunity to show their abilities in a college tournament set up.


“The Carolinas are very deep in junior golf talent and consistently have 40-50 juniors go on to play college golf. This event will help better prepare them for what they will face in college golf,” said Jason Cox, Director of Junior Golf Development. “Most junior tournaments play a shorter and easier course set up. This event will be set at much longer distances and harder hole locations. While this will help prepare our juniors, it will also be a great tournament for college coaches to evaluate the junior talent based on college golf conditions.”


There will be no age divisions as all boys will compete in one division and all girls will compete in one division. The event will be an excellent opportunity for junior golfers to show their abilities to college coaches as the 2020 recruiting window comes to a close. The CGA anticipates a substantial number of coaches from the southeast and mid-Atlantic regions will be in attendance to scout and recruit.

 

Boys’ to Watch:
 

• Tyler DeChellis of Clayton, N.C. is the No. 3 ranked golfer in the Carolinas Junior Boys’ Rankings. DeChellis finished in third at the TYGA Coastal Plains, tied for fourth at the Hope Valley Junior and finished in fifth at the Carolinas Junior Boys’.
   

• Branden Boyce of Spring Lake, N.C. made a major sweep this fall capturing the TYGA Tournament of Champions and the TYGA State Championship. Boyce also tied for third at the Carolinas PGA Junior to help him claim the No. 9 rank in the Carolinas Junior Boys’ Rankings.
   

• Michael La Sasso of Raleigh, N.C. has had eight top-10 finishes in the last six months including claiming runner-up at the Bojangles Junior and the AJGA Junior at 12 Oaks. More recently, La Sasso tied for third at the ACC Southeastern Fall Classic to earn the No. 17 rank in the Carolinas Junior Boys’ Rankings.
   

• Ben Jordan of Greensboro, N.C. captured the School’s Out Junior in June, then tied for third at the Dogwood State Junior in July and started his fall tying for ninth at the Hope Valley Junior. Jordan is the No. 18 ranked golfer in the Carolinas Junior Boys’ Rankings.
   

• Kyle Kushnir of Raleigh, N.C. had a hot summer season starting with a tie for seventh at the Bojangles Junior, then making it to the Semifinals at the North Carolina Junior Boys’ and wrapping with a tie for eighth at the Dogwood State Junior. Kushnir is ranked No. 23 in the Carolinas Junior Boys’ Rankings.
   

• Andrew Plate of Greensboro, N.C. is the No. 25 ranked golfer in the Carolinas Junior Boys’ Rankings. He earned that position after making it to the Round of 16 at the North Carolina Junior Boys’ and tying for third at the Carolinas PGA Junior. 

 

Girls’ to Watch:
 

• Paige Paolucci of Blythewood, S.C. started her year with a fourth place finish at the Morgan Lucas Championship. In Paolucci’s most recent start, she tied for sixth at the Harvey Brock Orange Jacket Classic.
   

• Ella Kue of Kings Mountain, N.C. has placed in the top-5 in 13 of her last 17 events. This includes winning the High Point Junior, claiming runner-up at the Maple Chase Junior, and finishing in third at the TYGA Tournament of Champions and the Daniel Meggs Memorial.
   

• Mary Sears Brown of Wake Forest, N.C. led the Mimosa Hills Junior Invitational in August and finished tied for ninth. Then she tied for sixth in her last start at the TYGA North State High School Challenge.
   

• Katelyn Griggs of Lexington, N.C. has played great golf in the last year including capturing the North Carolina Series at Sapona Golf Club, finishing runner-up at the North Carolina Series at Greensboro National and tying for second at the North Carolina Series at the Country Club of Whispering Pines.
   

The showcase format is 36-holes of individual stroke play.
 

Entry is open to any male or female amateur golfer who has not graduated from high school, maintains a residence in North Carolina or South Carolina, is a member or their parent is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA handicap index® at a CGA member club.
