The women’s championship season continued this week in the mountains of North Carolina, and two familiar names once again found themselves at the top of the leaderboard.
At High Meadows Golf & Country Club, Brenda Kuehn of Asheville, N.C., and Pat Brogden of Garner, N.C., added to already remarkable careers with victories at the North Carolina Senior Women’s Amateur Championship and North Carolina Super Senior Women’s Amateur Championship, respectively.
Kuehn Claims 10th CGA Title at NC Senior Women’s Amateur
Kuehn added another milestone to her decorated amateur career, winning the 22nd North Carolina Senior Women’s Amateur Championship and securing her 10th CGA championship title overall.
After opening with a first-round 75, Kuehn closed with a championship-best 1-under-par 72 in the final round to finish at 3-over par, two shots clear of the field at 147.
Colleen Mecredy of Mint Hill, N.C., and Julie Streng of Greensboro, N.C., tied for second place at 5-over par, 149. Streng posted the low final round of the championship with a 1-under-par 71.
Kimbra Benson of Pinehurst, N.C., finished fourth at 6-over par, 150, while Kathy Hartwiger of Pinehurst, N.C., placed fifth at 8-over par, 152.
Shirley Vaughn of Pinehurst, N.C., and Toni Notaro of Pinehurst, N.C., tied for sixth place at 10-over par, 154. Notaro entered the final round with the lead after an opening-round 74 before Kuehn surged ahead on the final day.
Kuehn’s victory marks her third North Carolina Senior Women’s Amateur title in the last five years, having also won the championship in 2022 and 2023. In addition to her competitive accomplishments, Kuehn currently serves on both the CGA and USGA Executive Committees.
Brogden Earns Historic 20th CGA Championship Title
In the North Carolina Super Senior Women’s Amateur Championship, Brogden continued building one of the most accomplished championship resumes in CGA history.
The Garner native carded rounds of 76-73 to finish at 5-over par, 149, good for a five-shot victory and her 20th CGA championship title overall.
Fran Wilkerson of Raleigh, N.C., finished runner-up at 10-over par, 154, after improving six shots in the final round with a 74.
Three players tied for third place at 13-over par, 157, including Patty Moore of Pinehurst, N.C., Marilyn Hays of Durham, N.C., and Angela Stewart of Greenville, N.C.
Brogden’s victory also marked another successful defense of her North Carolina Super Senior Women’s Amateur title as she continues a championship career that has spanned decades across Carolinas golf.
The CGA extends its sincere thanks to the staff and membership at High Meadows Golf & Country Club for hosting the championships and providing an outstanding venue for the state’s top senior women amateurs.
