Mills Wins Medalist in Match Play

HIGH POINT, NC -- Second round stroke play qualifying results of the 6th North Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship at High Point Country Club (Willow Creek) in High Point, NC on Thursday, August 6 (Par 36-36--72, 6890 yards, Course Rating: 74.7/141).
The final 18 holes of stoke play qualifying yielded 31 players plus the defending champion for match play. Players again battled the fast greens, heat, and a lightning delay at Willow Creek on Thursday.
Nolan Mills, IV, of Charlotte won medalist honors on the second playoff hole with a birdie over David Kocher, of Charlotte. Mills, IV shot a two-day total seven-under par 137 along with Kocher, who shot the tournament low round 67 Thursday to force a playoff.
Mills and Kocher will be joined by 30 additional golfers in match play, but not before a playoff was needed to determine the last match play seeds. Six players finished tied at four-over 148, with only four spots available in the match play bracket. On the par-5 10th hole, Daniel Brantley of Asheboro made the lone birdie in the group to earn the 28th seed. The par-3 11th hole decided the final three seeds as Jackson Bailey of Mathews, Conner Lewis of Davidson and Jonathan Jackson of Chapel Hill all made par.
Mills, IV, 2014 Dogwood State Junior Boys Champion, admittedly has not played many match play events, but knows what it takes to win matches. “Try not beat yourself, make pars and birdies and not give a hole away with a bogey.”
Round of 32 and Round of 16 matches will be played Friday and eight players will remain and try to win the newly enshrined Paul M. Simson Trophy, named for the Carolinas Golf Association’s all-time winningest golfer with 29 CGA Championships.
Entry is open to any male amateur golfer who has reached his 13th birthday by August 5, 2015, is a legal resident of North Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has an active GHIN USGA Handicap Index at a CGA member club that does not exceed 5.4.
