33rd CAROLINAS MID-AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP AT RALEIGH COUNTRY CLUB IN RALEIGH, NC

WEST END, NC -- The Carolinas Golf Association's 33rd Mid-Amateur Championship will take place on April 12-14 at Raleigh Country Club in Raleigh, NC.

The Carolinas Mid-Amateur Championship format is 54 holes of stroke play. After 36 holes, the field is cut to the low 60 scorers and ties.

Entry is open to any male golfer who has reached his 30th birthday by April 12, 2013, is a legal resident of North or South Carolina, is a member in good standing of a club which is a member of the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) and has a current USGA handicap index at a member club that does not exceed 5.4.

Raleigh Country Club was founded in 1948. Its course was the last designed by legendary architect Donald Ross, who died as mobilization for construction was underway. J.P. McGovern, Ross’s partner, staked out the course and Ellis Maples, another legendary architect, was hired to finish the final design. Maples later became the club’s first head professional and course superintendent.

The club previously hosted the 2008 North Carolina Amateur championship.

The field for the 2013 championship is expected to consist of 129 players. Exempt players were automatically accepted into the championship while others were required to qualify for the tournament through one of five 18 hole qualifiers.

Returning to defend his 2012 Carolinas Mid-Amateur victory is Scott Harvey of Greensboro, NC. Harvey’s final round 71 at the CC of Orangeburg and three-day total of 209 bested the field by six shots. Scott had finished second in the Mid-Amateur three times, including a one-stroke loss in 2011. Later that year he was selected as Men’s Player of the Year.

Other notable players to make the field include four-time Carolinas Mid-Amateur Champion (1990, 91, 94 & 97) Paul Simson of Raleigh, NC; 2011 North Carolina Mid-Amateur Champion Brian Westveer of Charlotte, NC; 2010 Carolinas Mid-Am champion Steve Liebler of Irmo, SC. In addition, 2 other former Carolinas Mid-Am Champions will compete this year: 2007 winner Walter Todd of Laurens, SC and 2003 winner Rick Cloninger of Fort Mill, SC.
