Tucker Named 2019 Parrott Award Winner

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (January 13, 2020) – Mason Tucker of Lancaster, S.C. has been named the recipient of the David Parrott Award for 2019 by the Carolinas Golf Association.  Tucker was selected from the eight members that represented the CGA in the Carolinas-Virginias Junior Team Matches at Boonsboro Country Club in Lynchburg, VA this past August.  Tucker is currently ranked #30 on the CGA’s junior boys’ rankings and ranked #14 on the South Carolinas Junior Golf Association’s (SCJGA) rankings.  Tucker captured the CGC S.C. Junior Match Play, the Jimmy Anderson Boys’ and the SCJGA The Blade titles in 2019.

Tucker, a high school junior who carries a GPA of 4.865, is at the top of his class at Lancaster High School in Lancaster, S.C. Tucker is a member of National Honor Society and Junior Civitans.

“Mason is an outstanding young man who has dedicated himself to intellectual, athletic, leadership and service oriented pursuits during his three years in high school,” stated Richard Gay, English Department Chairman and Junior Civitan Advisor at Lancaster High School.  “Academically, Mason challenges himself to excel because of his desire to know and understand new ideas and information. Socially, he is a leader who works to get others involved in service projects that benefit the school and community of Lancaster. He is a member of the National Honor Society and Junior Civitan Club, and he has been a member of the Lancaster High School golf team since he was in middle school.  Mason has taken challenging classes that required him to think and work on a level higher than most of his peers,” added Gay.

The David Parrott award is given annually to the Carolinas Team player who displays excellence in sportsmanship, ability and academic excellence. The award is presented by Dr. Larry and Joy Parrott of Camden, S.C. in honor of their son David. David Parrot was diagnosed with leukemia in the spring of 1982 and during his brief illness he participated in the golf camp at Duke University and competed in the SCGA South Carolina Junior Championship, finishing third in his flight. He was given the Derek Davis Sportsmanship Award at the championship for his effort, determination and inspiration he gave to all who knew him. David died July 29, 1982, at the age of 16.

Tucker joins a prestigious list of past Parrott Award winners that include Tee Burton, Jonathan Byrd, Dustin Bray, Austin Reeves, Ben Kohles, Andy Knox, Henry Shimp, Ryan Marter and 2018 recipient Thomas Eubanks.  Tucker will be presented the Parrott Award on Saturday, February 8, 2019 at Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, N.C. during the Carolinas Golf Association’s Golf Night and Annual Meeting.
